Bigger, Better, and a Little Noisy

The Windsor International Air Show commercial, shot by Bill Reilly, took first place at the Las Vegas convention this year. No small feat considering the competition has been around for years. This is a significant milestone, not just for the show, but for the area as well. Many eyes are starting to focus on our show as we had amazing success for our first venture.
We have had inquiries for tickets, rooms and insider secrets to next year's show already. Visitors came from all over the continent and we can expect much more next year.
All we have to do is do it all over, again. Only this time bigger.
In the next couple of months we are going to be confirming many aircraft and what will be happening at the 2010 show. Dynamic, exciting and very noisy are the key elements. Add in more audience participation, and well you get my message.
The veterans had a wonderful time at the last show and we are going to build on that. Many veterans asked if we could do it again and the answer is the same. Same place, same station.
This one is going to be memorable. Don't miss this chance to be up close and personal. Meet the veterans and get a chance to thank them, personally. We are, one at a time.
Our starting line up of partners in 2010's show;
Canadian Historical Aircraft Association
Windsor International Airport
Windsor Flying Club
Military Muster
Canadian Transportation Museum
Canadian Military
US Military

Want to be a part of our show?
Expect the unexpected.

ps. The DVD is out!

2009 Merchandise Available

The 2009 T-Shirts for the Century of Flight are still available but once they are gone they are gone.
The CF-18 Century Hornet Shirt was so popular we have asked permission to make some more of these available and they are now available in ladie's sizes.

Remember this aircraft will never be seen flying again after this year. It is to be mothballed and placed in a museum. Too bad because it was such a gorgeous sight to watch fly and having it immortalized on a t-shirt is a gift to have or give for Christmas.
We also have some Challenge Coins and there isn't many left. These were minted for the 100th Anniversary of Flight and the Coins will never be made again.

We also have the Windsor International Air Show picture CD coming out. It has tons of pictures capturing some of the best flyers on the planet along with the Hornet Century Paint scheme, it's a must have.

Just wait for this one....
We have a High Definition DVD coming out in December. Please PRE-BUY this one. It is a collection of the air show with arrivals, show days and departures all covered in eye watering colour like you have never seen. This is the best of the show captured and since it is the 100th Anniversary of Flight, this one should be in your collection. Get it in time for Christmas because after the Holidays the price will go up.
Scroll down the side for your items on the secure PayPal site.
Don't miss out on these items, becuase it's in very limited quantities.

Thank You To The Spectators

On behalf of the Windsor International Air Show and the volunteers, I would like to thank the spectators for coming out and supporting our show. It was a long year and a half of preparation and work, however it turned out to be an absolute stunning success.
We have received congratulations from all over North America.
I have been flooded with emails so much it has taken a week to answer them all. If you watched the show from outside the airport, we are elated that the spectators paid attention to the aircraft. We had reports of people all around the airport and some watching from nearby shopping centres that were on the flight line. We got your attention.
The Snowbirds are an absolute marvel to watch as they zip across the sky. They never get boring nor do the spectators get tired of watching them.
We hit our goals by providing the veterans with a weekend of enjoyment and hospitality for which they are entitled to, not just recognition, but camaraderie, respect and acknowledgement for their time efforts and patriotism. Our Veterans enjoyed the show immensely and we would do it again in a heartbeat just to see the fun and smiles emerge if at least for one weekend. I believe the spectators who met these brave men and women, enriched the lives of not only the vets, but learned a little history while enjoying the show. I say these are our Vets because we should take the ownership and the responsibility to never forget and pass the history down to the youth with all respect and dignity befitting fallen soldiers memories.
The service men and women in the current forces were also treated to a VIP weekend in Windsor and as they were leaving, many asked if they could be invited back as our volunteers catered to them and showed the hospitality deserving of their job. Meeting these pilots became a thrill of a lifetime for many spectators. Seeing the inside of these behemoth machines gave many an indescribable awe as they looked, touched and took pictures of some fantastic machinery.
We gave the Veterans the thanks, a few meals and the opportunity to watch some impressive machinery in action from the old to the newer technology. We shouldn't forget, that just because an aircraft can streak across the sky, it still has to have someone doing the job that gives us all our rights and freedoms.
Without the Veterans of the past, present and future, our society could never say we have freedoms. Freedom comes at a cost and the service men and women are there to make sure we all have the choices, rights and freedoms, we enjoy today.
We thanked the Vets, but it can never be enough. It was a show celebrating 100 years of Powered Flight in Canada and we think we hit a home run. I can just imagine the next 100.
We hope to see you next year, bigger and better.

First Arrivals

They started arriving. What an awesome sight as Windsor was again playing host to an Air Show.
The A Channel, CBC News, Today's Windsor and Blackburn Radio were there for the beginning of the biggest event in Essex County this weekend.
The First to arrive was the Kc135. Good thing because parking is at a premium this weekend at YQG Airport. The first one is always the special announcement they are coming. An hour later two Snowbirds, F-15's, our own CF-18 Hornet, Mike Goulian and then the 9 formation Snowbirds flew over the airport. If Windsor hadn't heard of the Air show, then the display of the CF-18 sure woke them up.
The F-15's from Mountain Home AFB flew over and did a break over the field. Awesome to see and they announced their arrival with flying grace to let us know who's in town. Pete McLeod, Canada's Red Bull pilot came in, Jacquie "B" Warda, and the Manfred Radius.
Mike Goulian decided to get airborne to burn of a little fuel and boy did he ever.
The hardest part of the show was making sure we are working while being awed by fantastic displays. Then as if almost out of nowhere the Sea Dragon Helicopter from the US Navy touched down with a landing that had the ground handlers cheering. The Sea Dragon was taxied with an escort truck and the driver reported having to stand on the brakes because the rotor wash just pushed the truck. It is big and powerful and the sound was deafening......
A Huey from Andrews Air Force Base planted itself on the grass with it's very distinctive sound.
Rick Volker and then a P51 Mustang touched down. Activity was heavy and exciting as only an Air Show can bring. The crowds were lined up outside the airport to get a glimpse of these aircraft and the kids were thrilled at the sights.
These machines are awesome to see, yet the men and women who fly them are the personalities to meet. Every single one of them was glad to arrive in Windsor.
The excitement is being throttled up at the Airport, so come on out and meet these pilots and get a chance to actually get inside of one of these behemoths.

Tickets are very affordable and the entertainment is priceless.
Don't be on the outside looking in, it's just not the same.
Today should see more of the same landing at the airport so get your tickets now and come early for the best spots on the field.

Chris Hadfield

Sometime on Saturday the Canadian Astronaut Chris Hadfield will be joining us at our show.
He is scheduled to take a check ride in the F-86 Hawk One Sabre after the flying show, as rumour has it he will be demonstrating at the Toronto Air Show.
You can find out more about him at,
http://www.asc-csa.gc.ca/eng/astronauts/biohadfield.asp

Just to make it a little more noteworthy, Chris will be celebrating his 50th Birthday while he is here in Windsor.

Don't be on the outside looking in, it's just not the same.

Tentative Show Time Schedule

We have drafted up a show performance schedule. This schedule WILL BE SUBJECT TO CHANGE right up until the show begins. Due to weather, mechanical and other problems out of our control there is no guarantee the performer will go on as scheduled, however we will do our best.
The Sunday show only will have the OPP Golden Helmets performing on the runways at YQG. There will also be aircraft leaving during the day which makes them part of the show and extends the performance.
The aircraft buffs know that is a perfect day to catch departure pictures of the aircraft.
Please be patient coming into the airport with traffic. Free shuttle buses will be running but not on specified schedules. They will do a bump and run service which is when they are full they move.
It's going to be an awesome show

Another reason to CELEBRATE!!

BUDAPEST, Hungary – American Michael Goulian won a thrill-filled Red Bull Air Race in Budapest on Thursday while Britain’s Paul Bonhomme grabbed second place and knocked Austrian Hannes Arch out of the championship lead in a thrilling battle over the Danube River in front of a national holiday crowd of 650,000. American Kirby Chambliss grabbed third place, which dropped Arch into fourth and off the podium for the first time in over a year. German rookie Matthias Dolderer took a career-best fifth place.
“It feels amazing,” Goulian said after clocking a winning time of 1:12.51 on the 6.6km course on a scorching hot day with temperatures over 30 degrees. It was his first career victory and moved him up to 8th place in the overall championship with 18 points. “This has been four years in the making. It’s been so hard to get the right machine, to get the engine working the right way. After four years of hard work this is amazing. I knew we had an airplane that could do it. It’s a great win.”

Mike's time is right here, right now and the air show industry considers him the finest available.
YES he will be here come August 29 & 30 2009.
Don't miss out on Mike's performance, it's a thriller......Catch The Experience!

KC-135R Tanker

Ok this one delivers. Seriously.
The crew from the 101 ARW in Maine will land in Windsor for the Air Show. Spectators will be allowed to get inside walk around and see some very exciting details inside the aircraft.
Just another reason to be on the field.
The KC-135 Stratotanker provides the core aerial refueling capability for the United States Air Force and has excelled in this role for more than 50 years. This unique asset enhances the Air Force's capability to accomplish its primary missions of Global Reach and Global Power. It also provides aerial refueling support to Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps and allied nation aircraft. The KC-135 is also capable of transporting litter and ambulatory patients using patient support pallets during aeromedical evacuations.
Four turbofans, mounted under 35-degree swept wings, power the KC-135 to takeoffs at gross weights up to 322,500 pounds (146,285 kilograms). Nearly all internal fuel can be pumped through the tanker's flying boom, the KC-135 's primary fuel transfer method. A special shuttlecock-shaped drogue, attached to and trailing behind the flying boom, may be used to refuel aircraft fitted with probes. An operator stationed in the rear of the plane controls the boom. A cargo deck above the refueling system can hold a mixed load of passengers and cargo. Depending on fuel storage configuration, the KC-135 can carry up to 83,000 pounds (37,648 kilograms) of cargo.
It's a serious aircraft for a serious show.

Sounds of Freedom. Coming this month.

Time For Some Noise

The F-15 Eagle is a twin-engine, all-weather tactical fighter designed to gain and maintain air superiority in aerial combat. Developed for the USAF it first flew in July 1972, and is one of the most recognized modern fighters. The F-15 is expected to remain in service until 2025. Despite originally being envisaged as a pure air superiority aircraft, the design proved flexible enough that an all-weather strike derivative, the F-15E Strike Eagle, was later developed, and entered service in 1989.
The F-15 in all air forces had an air-to-air combined record of 104 kills to 0 losses in air combat as of February 2008. To date, no air superiority versions of the F-15 (A/B/C/D models) have ever been shot down by enemy forces.

The Windsor International Airshow welcomes the pilots and techs from the 390 FS out of Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho.

Can you hear it yet? Sounds of Freedom.

T-34

The Beechcraft T-34 Mentor is a propeller-driven, single-engined, military trainer aircraft derived from the Beechcraft Model 35 Bonanza. The earlier versions of the T-34, dating from around the late 1940s to the 1950s, were piston engined. These were eventually succeeded by the upgraded T-34C Turbo-Mentor, powered by a turboprop engine. The T-34 remains in service almost six decades after it was first designed.
The pilots will be coming from the VT-2 Squadron.

CT-142 Dash 8

Navigators from around the world come to Canada to train on the CT-142 Dash-8. At the Canadian Forces Air Navigation School (CFANS), this twin turboprop aircraft is used to teach students aerial navigation and tactics.
Designed and produced in Canada, the CT-142 is a conversion of the popular Dash-8 airliner. It was adapted for navigation training by manufacturer Bombardier Inc. in the late 1980s.
Recent software modifications on the CT-142 allow students to operate their own Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and Inertial Navigation System (INS). The aircraft also features a new Tactical Display System that superimposes information on the students’ radar displays.
At CFANS, located at 17 Wing in Winnipeg, dozens of Canadian and foreign students train on CT-142s each year. CFANS has welcomed navigators from Singapore, Korea, New Zealand, Germany, Norway, The Netherlands and Australia.
Come and take a peek and say hi to the pilots.
Don't be on the outside looking in, it's just not the same.

T-45 Goshawk

The Windsor International Air Show is starting to heat up.
Two T-45 Goshawks will be coming up for static display from the VT-86 Sabrehawks located in Pensacola Florida.

At the heart of the Navy T45 training system is the two-seat, single-engine T-45 Goshawk. The aircraft has a wingspan of 30.1 feet, a length of 39.3 feet, a tail height of 13.5 feet and a gross takeoff weight of 13,636 pounds. The U.S. Navy's T-45 Goshawk is powered by a Rolls-Royce Adour F405-RR-401 engine producing 5,845 pounds of thrust. Designed to excel in the rigorous environment of naval aviation training, it has been fatigue-tested successfully to demonstrate a service life that exceeds the required 14, 400 flight-hours.
Described by instructor-pilots who fly it as "eminently forgiving," the T-45 is the only jet trainer designed to land routinely at sink rates of greater than 700 feet per minute, which are required for aircraft carrier approach landings. The Boeing team has continually upgraded the aircraft with features such as leading-edge wing slats for better low-speed performance, high-gain nosewheel steering for safer ground handling, and a reinforced composite stabilator with increased span for better pitch control.
In the 16 years since they entered service in 1992, T-45s have logged over 800,000 flight-hours and made over 50,000 arrested carrier landings. Approximately 3,500 student aviators from the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps and a number of foreign militaries have earned their wings in the T-45.
The Windsor International Air Show welcomes the Sabrehawks.

P51 Mustang

We have another edition to our show. Vintage Wings of Canada will be bringing down their Mustang and will be flying in our show.
The VWC Mustang Mk IV is painted in period markings of the Royal Canadian Air Force’s 442 Squadron, which flew the last Allied operational fighter mission of the entire European theatre of the Second World War - flying fighter cover for naval operations near the Channel Islands the day after VE Day.
We would like to thank Michael Potter of Vintage Wings for bringing this exceptional aircraft to our show.
It is truly a welcome edition.

CANADA DAY!

It's a time to enjoy the day and reflect on where we are as a country. It's a day to celebrate our independence and Freedom all across this land. Yes I'm somewhat patriotic. Canada is no doubt the absolute best country in the world and the land is absolutely gorgeous.
We also have to make sure we thank the service men and women who defend our rights and will stand up for those rights willingly. The Snowbirds, Skyhawks, CF18 Demo pilot, and the technicians that keep them flying, are all a shining example of our military and what they represent. At any time they can get a call and be shipped into hostile territory and in the meantime we as a country wake up everyday and continue on as we normally would.
We all enjoy our personal rights guaranteed by our Charter of Right and Freedoms.
Let's not forget or take for granted how they came about.
Canada is the best and Happy Birthday or Confederation, whichever you choose.

THANKS GUYS! You know who you are.

Army UH-60 Blackhawk

We have confirmation of another visitor to our show. The Blackhawk will be on static display so getting up close is a real treat.
The UH-60 Black Hawk is a four-bladed, twin-engine, medium-lift utility helicopter manufactured by Sikorsky Aircraft. Sikorsky submitted the S-70 design for the United States Army's Utility Tactical Transport Aircraft System (UTTAS) competition in 1972. The Army designated the prototype as the YUH-60A and selected the Black Hawk as the winner of the program in 1976, after a fly-off competition with the Boeing Vertol YUH-61. The UH-60A entered service with the Army in 1979, to replace the UH-1 Iroquois as the Army's tactical transport helicopter.
We're beginning to pick up some steam and blogging will be a little more intense as we get closer to the show date.
Parking, tickets, and special days are coming up. We are teaming up with some local restaurants so keep an eye open to the blog and web site. We will be advising you of critical updates, like parking, timing and a last special weekend to get special discounted pricing on tickets as well as t-shirts.
Don't forget the Gala. Tickets are selling well for the event, and it promises to be a real flash bang event.

Amazingly Affordable

A recent article in the LA Times describes in pretty good detail how Air Shows are attracting record crowds even with the current economy. The International Council of Air Shows has seen the typical pattern in past recessions. People want value and they want it at home. Air shows deliver and then some. Just like the rest of the entertainment industry air shows have developed over the years and it's more than just watching a plane fly by. It's become more of an experience with the noise, sights and ground displays. Professional announcers with mind boggling sound systems permeate your senses and get you right into the thick of it. You can almost imagine yourself inside that aircraft tumbling, pulling g's or just feeling the thrill of it all. Just being able to look up and see them isn't enough at an air show. Performers want to interact with the people and get to know them. Fighter pilots enjoy quick stories on how they cope or how they brag, if just a little. It's an amazing job, flying in an air show. Walk up and get an autograph. Attend one of the celebrations after the show.
It is a very reasonable cost and the value is extremely high.

Just to give spectators the amount of value they get from an airshow, I am posting the price of other events and you can see the best value. Once a spectator gets to an air show they will see how much value for their money they actually get. Some people will always stand outside the fence and say they watched a great show, but the real experience is being a part of the show rather than watching it. You can watch a ball game or hockey game from the stands but at an air show you get to see the aircraft up close and get to chat with the pilots who fly them.

For instance,

A good seat at a ball game. Not a nose bleed, but one where you are as close to the action as possible.
Let's look at a family of four.
$77 x 4 = $308
$10 for parking
$15 x 4 = $60 (Food Concessions)
This brings the total to $378 for about 3 hours in a seat watching.

Football, again good seats, not nosebleeds.
$180 x 4 = $720 (I had to divide it up because the tickets are in 5 game packages)
$20 for parking
$15 x 4 = $60 ( Food Concessions)
This brings the total to $800 for about 3 hours in a seat watching.

Hockey.
$100 x 4 = $400
$20 for parking
$15 x 4 = $60 (Food and Concessions)
This brings the total to $480 for about three hours in a seat watching.

Okay so you see how much time you get for the amount of money you pay which of course is your value.

Let's visit the Air Show price.
$100 for Two adults and two children for two(2) days. That's 16 tickets total.
$20 for VIP parking, or take a shuttle for $8
$15 x 4 = $60 Food and Concessions.
This brings the air show total to $180 for 16 hours of entertainment. The major aspect is you get to be a part of the show and mingle. Try that at the next baseball, football, or hockey game. We also have the biggest variety to see and do than any other event.
It's a chance for the family to come out together, walk around, and sit down and enjoy some absolutely fantastic flying from some of the best in the world.
Catch the Experience.

Great News....

The Snowbirds were originally flying on the Saturday August 29 in our show and then were to travel to Montreal. Capt Steve Thompson has graciously asked me if Windsor would host the Snowbirds on the Sunday August 30 as well. I accepted of course. When it comes to our Snowbirds, the sky is the limit(no pun, they already own the sky).
Hosting the Snowbirds is and always be an honor. The commitment the Snowbirds have for Windsor has shown through and I am absolutely thrilled our friends are staying for the weekend. This gives the spectators more of an opportunity to meet and greet our Canadian Team.

Get your tickets.

Catch the Experience, twice.

WARNING FROM HEALTH CANADA!

It begins with an itch you can't scratch. From there it progresses to a dull ache that just doesn't seem to subside, even with the aspirin. Next there is a feeling of euphoria mixed in with a small bit of anxiety and then it mixes with a little bit of adrenaline.

The physical symptoms reflect a chronic “readiness” to deal with some future threat. These symptoms may include fidgeting, muscle tension, and sleeping problems. Higher levels may produce such symptoms as rapid heartbeat, sweating, increased blood pressure, nausea, and dizziness. Sometimes it just doesn't matter where you go, you just have to.

There is no known cure but any pilot will tell you the best medicine for these symptoms is to fly. For some it's just an easy day up and down with a few circuits. Others like myself, need to roll around in more of a 3d fashion, rather than straight and level. Some just need the raw power to get their fix.

In the end, the symptoms never go away they stay around until the next flight. It never hurts to keep trying the cure, but it is a bucketful lot of fun.

If you can't fly then please come out, get your fix, and watch the show. There is something about the flight, noise and the smell of aviation fuel that makes your heart pound and imagination soar. Sure you can sit on the outside and watch from afar, but to really get the full experience you have to be front and centre.

Experience the noise and the feel of the sounds as our CF-18 Hornet fires up and prepares for take off. The jet will taxi right down the flight line in front of the crowd for that perfect picture on the ground. As he throttles up you can actually feel the thrust as he moves the plane elegantly forward and right then you will know you have the perfect spot. Then it's just starting. Watch as he maxes out the power for his take off lifts off with raw energy. Your jaw will drop. Sometimes it's hard to decide whether to watch him or take a picture. Imagine the same scenario, this time with 9 Tutor Jets in the air.

There is no cure for this ailment, just the experience.

Come on out front and center to watch 100 Years of Poewered Flight!

US Coast Guard

Another addition to the show. The HH-65C "Dolphin" helicopter from Air Station Detroit in flight over Lake St. Clair approaching the Detroit River with Windsor, Ontario in the background to the left will be making an appearance in our show.

The United States Coast Guard is a military, multi-mission, maritime service within the Department of Homeland Security and one of the nation's five armed services. Its core roles are to protect the public, the environment, and U.S. economic and security interests in any maritime region in which those interests may be at risk, including international waters and America's coasts, ports, and inland waterways.

We often see them flying over and around Windsor and the unique sound they have comes from
two Turbomeca 2C2-CG Turboshaft Engines that produce 934 shp. It's an unmistakable sound.
My wife and I were on a cruise ship last spring about three hours outside of San Juan heading back to Florida when a Coast Guard Dolphin flew alongside and circled the ship. Apparently an older gentlemen had had a mild heart attack and the helicopter was dispatched from San Juan to intercept the cruise ship. The captain had radioed and made arrangements to turn the ship around so the Coast Guard could get to the ship as quickly as possible and still have fuel to return. With the cruise ship into the wind travelling at 20 knots, pitching up and down, we watched as the pilot circled a couple of times while the crew on the ship prepared the landing pad, and then delicately parked on the front deck without so much as an inch of roll when he touched down. It was amazing to watch this up close. The passengers were 20 deep with their cameras. They loaded up the passenger in short order and then lifted off the deck with such an amazing skill it was almost surreal.
Later that night at dinner it was the talk of the ship and then some.
Just knowing that there is that kind of assistance out there when you get into trouble, makes you appreciate the service and dedication these individuals have.
We welcome the US Coast Guard to our show.

OPP Golden Helmets

As an added value attraction the OPP Golden Helmets will be performing at our show. The 20-member team, comprised of O.P.P. officers on regular patrol duties, consists of the Ride Master, Commentator, the motorcycle technician and 17 riders. Each team member must have successfully completed a three week motorcycle course and at least one season on motorcycle patrol. The members must be in good physical condition and possess a police fitness pin.

On October 13, 1909, the “Ontario Provincial Police Force” was established with a permanent force of salaried police constables.
The OPP can be traced back to the 19th century when John Wilson Murray, the province’s first full-time paid criminal detective, began his 31-year career in 1875. A small staff of government detectives worked for the Attorney General’s office until the formation of the OPP when many of these “provincial constables” subsequently joined the now formalized Ontario Provincial Police.

The year 2009 marks the OPP’s 100th anniversary, a milestone achievement of service to the people of Ontario. This year is not only a celebration of the past it also continues a commitment to excellence in policing throughout the next century.

Canada Remembers

As part of our program inclusion at our show we are making ample space available for our Veterans in a relaxed setting. These people gave up their time for service to our country so that we may enjoy the opportunities that they have literally handed down to us through the generations. The freedom and rights we enjoy as a nation were fought for and to this day are still protected by the service men and women in our military.

Our goal is simple. We want to show them the appreciation by giving them a front seat with amenities that they deserve. We want to give the youth in our generation the opportunity to interact with these Veterans so that they may know and understand the commitment and sacrifices they made so we today, may sit and watch an Air Show display with awe and a sense of pride in our country.

We don't want the history of courage, determination and sacrifice to fade away and become a distant memory by only a few. Most of us have never known war in our daily lives and it is because of the values they fought for that we, hopefully, may never have to face on our doorstep.

The Lancaster 212 restoration is an immense project with a very rich history in Canada. It is an icon to those who flew it in unbelievable conditions to protect human rights and the value of freedom.

Join us as we give just a little back for such a immense sacrifice as rest assured, the Veterans know at how high a price freedom comes, even to this day. Help us out by attending the show and shake the hand or give a nod to these selfless individuals.

It doesn't take much to say thank you.

VIA Rail

Trademark owned by VIA Rail Canada Inc.

We welcome our newest sponsor for our air show. VIA Rail has now become another Wing Supporter.
We also have been given two Promotional Travel Certificates for VIA's Comfort Class seating for a Windsor to Ottawa round trip. We also will make it an enjoyable stay in Ottawa with hotel reservations for a couple of nights. The train trip itself will be around ten hours one way. It would make a great getaway in the fall for the changing of the seasons.
One of our performers will be giving it away on August 30 show day just before the flying display starts. Of course the winner must be present to claim and we will, of course give the winners a great photo opportunity.
It's just another way we want to be able to show appreciation to the spectators that come to our show.
Stay tuned because it's just getting started.

Just Warming Up

We just got some more updates on another heavier than air aircraft and is this one heavy.

An MH-53E Sea Dragon from the Airborne Mine Countermeasures Weapon Systems Training School will be stopping by for static display.

The newest military version of Sikorsky's H-53E/S80 series, the MH-53E Sea Dragon, is the Western world's largest helicopter. The MH-53E is used primarily for Airborne Mine Countermeasures (AMCM), with a secondary mission of shipboard delivery. Airborne Mine Countermeasures (AMCM) missions include mine sweeping and ancillary spotting, mine neutralization, floating mine destruction, channel marking, and surface towing of small craft and ships. Additional mission capabilities include air-to-air refueling, hover in-flight refueling, search and rescue, and external cargo transport operations, in both land and seaborne environments. The MH-53E Helicopter also has the ability to perform Vertical Onboard Delivery (VOD) missions as well as transportation of personnel and cargo.
AWSTS has defined tactical requirements for MH-53E roles in AMCM, Heavy Lift, and Special Warfare, culminating with the establishment of the CHSCWL Weapons Training Unit and the MH-53E Air combat Tactical Training Continuum. AWSTS has led the fleet in incorporating the Naval Aviator Production Process Improvement (NAPPI) resulting in improved student tracking, reducing the average time to train, and improving the quality of replacement pilots and aircrew sent to the fleet. The Barrier Removal Team established by AWSTS to identify and remove obstacles hindering aircraft availability and hence improve pilot and aircrew production was so successful that it has been used as a model for implementation into other Fleet Replacement Squadrons. Furthermore, AWSTS directed the complete overhaul of five separate MH-53E Navy flight manuals and the development of a comprehensive NTTP Tactical Pocket Guide, promoting the continued improvement of this legacy aircraft and solidifying the role of the MH-53E in the fleet for decades to come.
This will be one of the first ones to arrive pre-show. He's pretty big boy.
We welcome the pilots and crew to Windsor.

Canadian Tire Money

Now that we have the Click n"Print working, (although the web site needs a bigger logo) you can go from here or go to the web site and click on ClickN'Print text under the Advanced Tickets.
We will be placing a nice big logo there next week.

In May we will be announcing a place where you can exchange Canadian Tire Money for gate passes. We'll ask AM800 to make an announcement for us, post it here and on our web site.

I have been getting some emails on it and I apologize if you didn't get a response. Some of the emails I have replied to came back undeliverable.
I go the first batch of t-shirts and will pick up the hats tomorrow. They do look rather good. I will be giving away some soon so stay updated. Sign up for email notifications as we will be setting up free give aways very soon and I will be giving tips on what to expect at the show as well as how to make the best of the weekend show.
We should start escalating with the planning very soon as we will be getting updates from the US military very soon.
Cheers

Loss Of A Channel To The Community

The closing of A Channel in Windsor is going to be devastating. Our show as well as other events in the community are losing a voice that gets our messages out.

We will know of what goes on in London, Toronto or even Detroit, more than what happens across the street from our homes.

Yes the times are difficult, yet the guidelines the stations have to follow are long and expensive. In order to cater to our community they have to make money. We know that.

The local charity/non-profit community relies on the corporate charity supplied by A Channel, and yes AM 800 has to be mentioned also. Without these corporate community icons, the festivals and events that happen in Windsor-Essex could be silenced. We need that media. Will writing letters get it done? Maybe, but then again the person that makes the decisions on matters like this doesn't care nor are they in any danger of losing in the next election.

We will continue to plug our show at every possible chance we get and where ever we can.
We hope we can contribute to the support everyone in the community is giving A Channel to ensure they have a parachuted landing.

Presenting.....

Pictures will be coming out more and more of the new CF18 Hornet Centennial of Flight colors. It looks spectacular on the ground but in flight it dominates the sky.
It's a permanent picture now.

Ever Wonder?

So we've all seen the pictures of jets banking and squeezing the water out of the air leaving vapour trails. Ever wonder how it feels to be in the back seat?

I've copied a story that has been around for years and still sums it all up. It was first printed in September 14, 1999 in Sports Illustrated. It is well worth the read, even today.

Enjoy the ride.....

Now this message for America's most famous athletes: Someday you may be invited to fly in the backseat of one of your country's most powerful fighter jets. Many of you already have -- John Elway, John Stockton, Tiger Woods to name a few. If you get this opportunity, let me urge you, with the greatest sincerity....
Move to Guam. Change your name. Fake your own death. Whatever you do, do not go. I know. The U.S. Navy invited me to try it. I was thrilled. I was pumped. I was toast!

I should've known when they told me my pilot would be Chip (Biff) King of Fighter Squadron 213 at Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach. Whatever you're thinking a Top Gun named Chip (Biff) King looks like, triple it. He's about six-foot, tan, ice-blue eyes, wavy surfer hair, finger-crippling handshake -- the kind of man who wrestles dyspeptic alligators in his leisure time. If you see this man, run the other way. Fast.
Biff King was born to fly. His father, Jack King, was for years the voice of NASA missions. ("T-minus 15 seconds and counting...." Remember?) Chip would charge neighborhood kids a quarter each to hear his dad. Jack would wake up from naps surrounded by nine-year-olds waiting for him to say, "We have a liftoff."

Biff was to fly me in an F-14D Tomcat, a ridiculously powerful $60 million weapon with nearly as much thrust as weight, not unlike Colin Montgomerie. I was worried about getting airsick, so the night before the flight I asked Biff if there was something I should eat the next morning.
"Bananas," he said.
"For the potassium?" I asked.
"No," Biff said, "because they taste about the same coming up as they do going down."

The next morning, out on the tarmac, I had on my flight suit with my name sewn over the left breast. (No call sign -- like Crash or Sticky or Leadfoot -- but, still, very cool.) I carried my helmet in the crook of my arm, as Biff had instructed. If ever in my life I had a chance to nail Nicole Kidman, that was it.
A fighter pilot named Psycho gave me a safety briefing and then fastened me into my ejection seat, which, when employed, would "egress" me out of the plane at such a velocity that I would be immediately knocked unconscious.

Just as I was thinking about aborting the flight, the canopy closed over me, and Biff gave the ground crew a thumbs-up. In minutes we were firing nose up at 600 mph. We leveled out and then canopy-rolled over another F-14. Those 20 minutes were the rush of my life. Unfortunately, the ride lasted 80.
It was like being on the roller coaster at Six Flags Over Hell. Only without rails. We did barrel rolls, sap rolls, loops, yanks and banks. We dived, rose and dived again, sometimes with a vertical velocity of 10,000 feet per minute. We chased another F-14, and it chased us. We broke the speed of sound. Sea was sky and sky was sea. Flying at 200 feet we did 90-degree turns at 550 mph, creating a G force of 6.5, which is to say I felt as if 6.5 times my body weight was smashing against me, thereby approximating life as Mrs. Colin Montgomerie.

And I egressed the bananas. I egressed the pizza from the night before. And the lunch before that. I egressed a box of Milk Duds from the sixth grade. I made Linda Blair look polite. Because of the G's, I was egressing stuff that did not even want to be egressed. I went through not one airsick bag, but two. Biff said I passed out. Twice.
I was coated in sweat. At one point, as we were coming in upside down in a banked curve on a mock bombing target and the G's were flattening me like a tortilla and I was in and out of consciousness, I realized I was the first person in history to throw down.

I used to know cool. Cool was Elway throwing a touchdown pass, or Norman making a five-iron bite. But now I really know cool. Cool is guys like Biff, men with cast-iron stomachs and Freon nerves. I wouldn't go up there again for Derek Jeter's black book, but I'm glad Biff does every day, and for less a year than a rookie reliever makes in a home stand.
A week later, when the spins finally stopped, Biff called. He said he and the fighters had the perfect call sign for me. Said he'd send it on a patch for my flight suit.
What is it? I asked.
"Two Bags."
Don't you dare tell Nicole.

Yes I have had passengers who became part of the club.

Check Yourself In

We're getting there.
The Click n"Print people have been working diligently to finish our graphics for the tickets. I've just approved the final draft. I never thought spell check would mean so much. Take advantage of the advance ticket sale pricing. There is also VIP parking passes available. They are limited in number so my best advice is to take the bus into the show. We will be setting up some bus routes so we can get people in and out with as little frustration as possible. We're asking you to come out and enjoy the day.
I have been getting a lot of email about the Canadian Tire Money exchange. Keep visiting the web site for details and my blog. We will be setting up an email blast from our web site soon to keep you informed on the details. Once we get a time and place anyone interested in exchanging a drawer of Canadian Tire Money for tickets is more than welcome. Even we need supplies once and a while.
The show is actually growing a mind of it's own right now. We're just waiting for more commitments from the US side and we have a lot of exciting ideas being tossed out.
Strap in tight, it's going to be quite the ride.

Rochester Update

NECAS,(Northeast Council of Air Shows) was held last weekend and we came back even more excited, if that was possible. Talk about a great group of people.
The Harvard boys were there, Dave, Spence, Kent and Az. Looking forward to seeing them over Windsor again. They were scheduled to fly in Red Bull this year but with Red Bull moving the race date, they had to honor another commitment. Windsor will be graced by their style this August. The noise of their props makes my hair stand on end. These days, that's impressive.
Other news.....
The Hornet pictures were rolled out in its glossy paint job with a round of applause. We have already seen the pics coming out of the hanger, but that didn't dampen the enthusiasm about it. The painted up Tutor with the Centennaires colors and Hawk 1 will be visiting our show.
Hawk 1 will be flying with the Snowbirds. Yes with them. They will do some passes in formation and when the Snowbirds head out for warm up, Hawk 1 will do a little solo act. The Tutor Centennaire will only be used for static, but hey, I'm still very impressed. Up close and personal. A chance to get some really great close up photos.
Our ground displays are starting to grow. We will have a line up of antique vehicles and displays of remote controlled aircraft. Did I mention the huge slide?
The kids will have a blast as we are planning the boot camp. I wish I could post all that is ready but I still need a lot of confirmation. Lots to do and lots to see.

We're almost finished with setting up the ticket purchasing from Click N Print. Easy enough. Hotels are already making packages available for the weekend and beyond.
We still need volunteers to help out, so don't be shy.

US Navy F18 Tactical Demonstration

Another milestone.

The announcement came out yesterday that we will be getting the F18C demonstration team from the US military.
It just keeps getting better.
The Snowbirds were suppose to fly into town yesterday but got held up by bad weather. There is a remote chance they still may be able to make it in today, however the weather map really isn't being friendly right now. Lots of precipitation heading this way.
We had the launch of our web site yesterday and got a lot of good reviews. We are still setting up the ticket graphics so please be patient while we get that perfected. Parking will be available close to the airport but we do recommend taking a shuttle in and out. Buses will have priority in and out. If it turns out to be a hot day, we don't want people stuck in traffic sweltering in the heat. Let the buses get you in and out. We are looking at printing coupons with the tickets so who wouldn't enjoy an easy ride out of the airport and then enjoy some Windsor hospitality.
Catch you soon!

The New Paint Job for the CF18 Demo

Here is a picture of the Hornet that will be in Windsor at our Air Show in August. It looks fast just sitting still.
I can't wait for the summer.

Racing Fans!

Yes the announcement is official. Red Bull is coming back with our own Canadian, Pete Mcleod. Yes it's going to be a great aviation summer for Windsor. At the airport you will be able to get up close and personal with the pilots and support crews.

We have two of the Snowbirds stopping by on Feb. 18 at Windsor Airport. They will be stopping by to take a look around and do some preliminary briefings about the show. We also will be launching the web site that day. Tickets will be available and we will also be posting links for our out of town guests to the hotels we have partnered with.
The cost is very affordable, especially if you purchase early. There will be food, concessions and a host of ground activities.
It will make a great family weekend.

Truly International

We got the official ok from the US Military. They're definitely going to be here, it's just a matter of what can make it.
Gerry, our go to guy in liaison with the US side has been diligently preparing our list and continues to amaze me.
We have a wide area to fill up with aircraft and the show is promising to be a non-stop flurry of aircraft activity from opening till closing.
Noise and then some.
With my partner Bill, we are preparing to head out to the North East Council of Air Shows meeting on Feb.20. we get to chat and make plans with some of the best in the business and meet with some really great people.
I have also enlisted a jumbo sized playground for our youthful fliers. The kids will be able to jump and run around this inflatable we want to bring in. It's family fun. We even have a few of the local pilots wanting to try it out.
I'm feverishly working on the web site to get it up and running. We will have helicopter and plane rides available. You will be able to pre purchase the rides before the show and book at the show for rides later in the evening. If you pre book a ride we can throw in a pass.
As another incentive we will be taking in Canadian Tire money for tickets. It's a good value and we always need supplies. There will be designated sites available that will take the Canadian Tire money, not the stores.
We want to get as many people out to enjoy our show because the 100th Anniversary only comes once.
It's going to be big.

Cold Gold

It looks absolutely marvelous.
We can look forward to this Sabre gracing the skies over Windsor in August.

http://www.vintagewings.ca/page?s=63&lang=en-CA

Vintage Wings is an extraordinary place where aviation history comes alive through dedicated people making sure we remember the historical significance of the aircraft that flew so long ago.
Take a look at Vintage Wings web site. The aircraft in that hanger are spectacular.

On the other side of it planning is still going very well. The team is coming together and we are starting to ramp up and get some kind of an idea what the show will look like. We still have to get confirmation on some aircraft but that is more or less procedure. I get pretty anxious at times waiting for an answer but that's the way it works. We are also going to have plane and helicopter rides before and after the show. Once we get our web site up and running you will be able to purchase a ride before the show and get a pass into the show. Not bad. Or you can wait until after the show. I always prefer to pre-buy my articles. It makes planning a lot easier once you get to the show. Shirts and hats will also be available before the show. Once the web site goes live keep looking back because with the updates there is going to be some surprises in store.

Cheers

Sneak Preview

Okay, so I'm bad at keeping secrets. That's what makes planning a show so awesome. I get to tell people "inside" secrets and get away with it.
So let's drop a few names... No wait that wouldn't be fair or would it? For right now we still have lots of aircraft and when it comes down to it we may have to tell a few to stay home because of field limitations. If we fill the field where are the people gonna go?

The Snowbirds coordinators will be in town on Feb. 18 for a preliminary visit. It's time for serious planning and execution. We then head to NECAS in New York for a final chit chat with other organizers and after that we turn on the burners.

We are getting ramped up and looking for willing and able bodies for volunteer duties. It's not hard work, it's more of a commitment for your time. Volunteers are the heart and soul of any festival and we are no exception.

We have lots of free stuff to give away at the show. Not just keychains................ Stay tuned to that one.

The partnerships and relationships we are investing in for the show should give us an extreme edge for a vibrant show.

Ok, names huh?

Not yet, coming soon. That hurts keeping in some info, believe me.

Once the web site is live at the end of the month I will be posting the invited ones as well as the confirmed. There will also be a page of possibilities we have arranged but may have logistical concerns getting here. Lancaster anyone?

All in all, the 100th Century of Flight is a great aviation year.

It's going to be noisy. Sound of Freedom taking flight. Stay tuned.....................

The New Year

Happy New Year everyone. Just some quick notes.

Our webmaster has come up with the first design on our website. I think we picked the right person. It's bright and flashy yet will be simple to navigate. Our goal is to have it up and running by the end of January. and then ticket sales should begin. We are looking forward to bringing in some of the most exciting pilots and aircraft we can get.

I will still keep up the blog after the website is launched because it will be easier to chat about happenings rather than update the website with general information. I will be highlighting each performer with background info and stats. Also any info on new aircraft will be updated quickly as I get the information to keep everyone in the loop.

There will be a section to log in and keep updated automatically. E-mail blasts will be sent out each time there is a change or update. We wouldn't want to keep anyone in the dark on this.
Cheers
